San Francisco Bay Area Salt Ponds
|
Herb's aerial photography of San Francisco bay began with a flight in a small two passenger airplane over the south bay salt ponds. Moments after take off from Palo Alto airport, the airplane introduced Herb to a world of magnificent colors shapes and reflections. Making aerials of the salt ponds led to exploring the Bay from the air. Changing seasons, tides, salinity and other forces have ensured that each visit to this world is unique. The California Academy of Sciences published a photo essay of Herb's aerial photography of the salt ponds in its magazine California Wild which explains in detail the interactions of salt loving algae, brine shrimp and other small organisms together with weather patterns that create the salt pond's color palette.

Architecture
|
Herb has had the opportunity to work with numerous leading architectural firms. This work has resulted in an extensive collection of aerial photography and aerial video of architecture of Los Angeles, New York City, Mexico City, San Francisco, Tokyo and other interesting cities. Included are skyscrapers and other interesting structures and landscape architecture. Herb creates architectural aerial photography from his Taylorcraft when possible, and from numerous helicopter types when lower altitudes are necessary. In addition to documenting finished projects, architects retain Herb to create aerial photography and aerial video for renderings of new projects and to illustrate what views can be expected from the new structures.

Wine Country
|
Herb's airplane and firm are based at the Petaluma airport in Sonoma County, in the heart of California's wine country. As a result, Herb is flying over the wine country on his way to almost every assignment. This has given him a unique opportunity to photograph this interesting landscape during every season and during many different weather conditions. Herb's aerial photography of the wine country has been used in numerous books and magazines. The collection of wine country aerial photography includes not only an extensive collection of northern California vineyards and wineries but each of the important wine growing regions in California.

San Francisco Bay Area Launch
|
Orchestrating the positions of target and chase aircraft, coordinating the skills of two or more pilots and scripting visually engaging backgrounds and lighting situations ensure that air to air photography missions are always interesting. Virgin America prepared for the launch of a new San Francisco based airline in the spring of 2007 and hired Herb to shoot air to air photography for this launch. The Lear 25B used for the photography has an endurance of only 1.5 hours before refueling; during Lear refueling stops the Airbus subject aircraft climbed to altitude, where fuel burn is significantly less. Locations for the Virgin America shoot included the Golden Gate bridge, the City of San Francisco, the Monterey Coastline, Yosemite and the Central Valley. The entire job was shot with Canon digital cameras and Canon lenses. Herb also enjoys air to air photography of historical military aircraft.

Events
| One of Herb's specialities is photographing events from above. These assignments often require extensive pre-production planning and precise mission execution and ground coordination. One of the more complex event assignments was to create night time aerial photographs for the City of Palo Alto's Centennial Celebration. Herb used over 30,000 watts of generator powered strobe lights triggered via radio signals synchronized with the aerial cameras to create these photographs from a helicopter. Herb has photographed Rolling Stones' Bridges To Babylon Tour, the first official game at the newly constructed Giant's stadium in San Francisco, the Virgin de Guadalupe and Independence day celebrations in Mexico City, the first XFL game in San Francisco and the NASCAR races at the Infineon and Daytona tracks. |
