Night Time Aerial Photography

Night Time Aerial Photography

Over the past twelve years, Aerial Archives has developed unique skills in creating aerial photographs at night on assignment for clients.

Using specialized equipment, films and sensors we are able to create unique night time images from the air.

For example, during the Rolling Stones' Bridges To Babylon Tour, Aerial Archives created aerial photographs at night of the crowd, concerts, freeways and parking lots during two evenings while the Stones were performing at the Oakland coliseum.

For the City of Palo Alto's Centennial Celebration, we created night time aerial photographs of the multimedia show and spectators. For this production, we set up over 30,000 watts of strobe lights in downtown Palo Alto which we triggered via radio signals synchronized with our aerial cameras. Our strobes were synched not only to our cameras but were also incorporated into the event, precisely timed by cues via FAA ground to air frequency communication.

Aerial Archives also created the night time aerial photography for what we understand is the first aerial light pollution study. Working with leading researchers in the field of night time light pollution at the University of Arizona, Tucson, Aerial Archives created night time aerial photography of approximately one square mile, in many exposures, to ensure sufficient resolution for the project, and then mosaicked these together using an orthorectified reference photograph of the area to match observed lighting to structures and fixtures on the ground. Aerial Archives worked with researchers prior to the shoot testing a variety of exposures, lenses and sensors to ensure that the results of the aerial photography would provide the researchers with the data they needed.
